Lendava

Lendava is the nearest town to Velika Polana. It can be reached by car (10 minutes) or bike (40 minutes). The cycle trip will give you a good feel for the landscape of the area.

View from Holy Trinity Church, Lendava

To cycle to Lendava, go through Velika Polana, and turn right just passed the Mercator store (opposite the church). Take the first left, and then take the left hand fork by the well. The road will turn into a track. Follow it until you reach a road. Turn right, then after about a hundred yards turn left onto a track across a field, towards Copek’s Mill (16th Century). (NB there is an alternative route to this point via Mala Polana). At the mill, cross the stream to reach a track. Turn right and follow the track for 6km. When you reach the Lendava bypass, go under it and follow the track the other side. It will bring you out at the edge of the Ledava River, close to the Spar and Mercator supermarkets.

If you go over the first roundabout and then left at the next roundabout, you will enter the main street, which is the older, more attractive part of the town.

Things to do in Lendava

The tourist information office (open 8am - 6pm Mon - Fri, 9am - 2pm Sat and 9am - 1pm Sun) is located on the main road, by the church and opposite the ice cream parlour (highly recommended).

Castle: To reach the castle from the main street, follow the road just after the church (St Catherine’s). Where it forks, go left, then left again, up a steep hill. The castle costs around 2 euros to enter. No information is currently in English, but you can purchase an English leaflet. The castle appears mainly to act as an exhibition hall for young artists. (Open 8am – 4pm  Mon - Fri, 10am - 2pm Sat. Closed Sun & holidays).

Holy Trinity Church: A steep but rewarding climb. You can see the church perched on a hill when approaching Lendava. To reach it, follow the road just after the church (St Catherine’s). Where it forks, go right. Keep climbing for 0.8km. Turn right when you reach the junction and follow a narrow road to the church. The views form the church grounds are stunning. There is apparently a mummified body of local warrior Mihael Hladik (slain by the Turks in 1603) in the church. According to the Rough Guide you can arrange to visit the church to see this at the tourist office.

Wineries: There are numerous wineries in the hills around Lendava that can be visited. A number can be accessed by continuing up the road that led up to the Holy Trinity church.

Culture Centre: www.zkp-lendava.si May have a show or concert on and is an interesting piece of modern architecture in its own right. We also recommend the cafe on the ground floor, particularly if you like chocolate.

Lendava Spa: www.terme-lendava.si   To get to the spa turn right just before the bridge over the Ledava (signposted Spa and camping). Go straight on until the T junction. Turn right, then left in front of the hotel. The spa can be entered at the rear of the hotel reception. There are thermal pools, a water park and sauna/steam rooms. Also a fitness suite. Prices (2006) are:

Pool Prices and opening times can be viewed here.

Sauna Prices and opening times can be viewed here.

You must not wear a swimming costume in the sauna or steam room. Sheets are provided, which can be used to protect your modesty.

If you have a sauna and swim you will also need to pay a deposit for the key, which allows you to re-enter the sauna area after visiting the swimming baths. You will also be given a locker key.
